How to tell you’re a nerd: Method 122 (or cartoons and character building via “Star Trek”)

You’ve decided long ago that if you were a cartoon, you most likely would not have an angel and a devil appear when trying to make a moral or ethical decision.  Instead you’d have a Klingon and a Vulcan on one shoulder with a Romulan and a Ferengi on the other shoulder.

  1. Surely it would be better to have the Vulcan and Ferengi on one shoulder and the Klingon and Romulan on the other?
One side with pure business logic and the other kill, maim, destroy.

    • Actually, the way I look at it, the Vulcan and Klingon fit better. Here’s my way of thinking. The Vulcan obviously represents the pure, unemotional view of logic, as well as scientific reasoning. Vulcans are upfront and honest about how they see a situation.

While Klingons are known for death, destruction, and battle, they are driven by honor. They view life in terms of being able to stand proud, knowing that their actions bring glory and honor to their House. A Klingon is also honest, and upfront with who they are, seeing cowardice as the ultimate form of dishonor. They face their problems head-on with weapon in hand, prepared to go to Sto’Vo’Kor (their afterlife) with a battle cry and a smile upon their lips. To achieve victory through manipulation, secretiveness, and dishonesty is seen as a hollow, dishonorable victory.

Grouping a Ferengi and Romulan together makes more sense to me because both races like to plot and use cunning and manipulation to achieve their goals. Romulans are masters and espionage, secretiveness, and deception. Ferengi, for all of their Rules of Acquisition, are dishonest swindlers, who have been known to deceive and undermine others to achieve their financial success. They glorify selfishness and greed. Both Romulans and Ferengi are experts on “pulling the woool over people’s eyes.” Romulans do it for political gain, while Ferengi do it for financial gain.
